FAQs

Question 1: What is upcycled sari silk?

Upcycling refers to the process of reuse or transformation of otherwise leftover or discarded material into something new, with better environmental value. Upcycled sari silk in our case refers to leftover sari yarn collected from sari weavers in the South of India. This is leftover or discarded yarn from weaving saris, which are an icon of Indian culture and the most popular Indian national dress.

Question 2: Hand knotted v/s hand tufted- what is the difference?

Carpets can either be hand made (hand knotted), or machine made (hand tufted). Mishcat Co is a firm believer in hand made, which is why we do not have anything machine made at all. Each of our carpets - no matter what material- are hand knotted.

Question 3: How long does it take to make a Mishcat carpet?

Typically, a hand knotted carpets can take up to 6 months to make. However, Mishcat Co makes each carpet within 8-12 weeks. However, since a big part of our philosophy is working with independent weavers and not with an organized, easy to manage factory production, we do (rarely) have some unforeseen situations come up at times which may lead to delays. We embrace and love working within these limitations- it adds to the narrative and intangible warmth of our products!

Question 4: Do you have carpets in stock?

Always! We always have available options in our standard sizes (4x6, 5x7, 8x10, 9x12, 10x14). Just ask us what's in stock and we'll let you know asap.

Question 5: Can I order a custom size?

Absolutely! You can order any of our carpets in any size you like. You can also order a round carpet if you desire. We're happy to accommodate all size requirements.

Question 6: Where are your independent weavers based?

All across little villages in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. Quality control and finishing is then done at our finishing facility in UP.

Question 7: What is the process behind weaving a Mishcat Co carpet?

Once the sari yarn is collected, a design blueprint is used to hand knot each carpet. The blueprint is like an outline of a coloring book, within which the weaver does each knot. Which hue and speckle goes where, is determined by the weaver. Once woven, a carpet is then sheared, finished, and washed and prepped to be sent to our studio! Find more details on our 'Process' page.

Question 8: I don't want to spend too much. Any suggestions?

Our carpets are very modestly priced, for something that could last a life time! We often forget that carpets occupy the largest part of our rooms. For example, if you look at an 8 x 10 ft carpet (which is our most popular size), it covers about 80 square feet- which is a large area! A sofa in comparison, is about 18 square feet on average. Thus, a carpet actually has the most impact when someone walks in the room, which is why we say it should ideally be the starting point to curating a space. We highly recommend you get one of our sari silks, or a wool and sari silk. If that isn't possible at the moment, you could always consider a smaller sized wool carpet. Alternatively, you can always ask us for photos of flat weaves we currently have in stock for more casual areas!

Question 9: Should I buy a rug if I have pets?

Not only are we completely pet friendly, on the contrary cats and dogs love us! We have a collection of the cutest photos our clients have sent us of their pups sprawled and snuggled on our carpets. Just make sure they're trained and life is good. :)

Question 10: Do you ship globally?

Absolutely! We ship anywhere, and everywhere in the world. We have a great in-house logistics team that handles everything- from packaging to shipping to paperwork. You choose your carpet and leave the rest to us. Easy breezy!

Question 11: What are the standard rug sizes? Could you help me with the European size conversion?

Our standard sizes (in feet) are 4x6, 5x7, 8x10, 9x12 and 10x14. This translates (in cm) to 120x180, 150x210, 240x310, 270x365 and 310x430 for European sizes.

Question 12: What is the maintenance and care for sari silk carpets?

The lifetime of our carpets (or any carpet!) depends on the care and maintenance you give them. Dampness should be avoided, and vacuuming should be done using a smooth metallic head, instead of a carpet brush that may irritate the fibre. For hard to remove stains, professional cleaning is recommended. We also offer in-studio dry cleaning services- drop off your carpet at Mishco HQ and pick it up within 10 days. Voila!

Question 13: Do you accept offline payments?

Absolutely! Whatever works for you. We accept cheques and bank/wire transfers too, just call us on +91 9811183080 or email us at studio@mishcatco.com for any help you may need to process offline transactions.

Question 14: Do you accept refunds?

Unfortunately, we are not able to accept any refunds on carpets which have been ordered. Please make sure you are happy with your purchase before you place your order- ask us all the questions you need!
